Randy is the diminutive form of the masculine names Randall or Randolph. Randolph originated from the Old Norse Randúlfr, from the components “rand” meaning ‘rim of a shield’ and “úlfr” meaning ‘wolf’. The French Normans brought the name to England, although it may have already existed through the presence of Viking invaders and Scandinavian settlers pre 11th century. Randall became a medieval nickname in England which eventually transferred into a surname. Randy is a pet form of both Randolph and Randall. It is also sometimes used as a pet form of the female name Miranda.

Randy has long been used as a pet form of Randolph and Randall in the United States. However, as an independently given name, Randy first appeared on the male naming charts in 1935. This short form took off in popularity pretty quickly and hit the Top 100 list by 1948. The height of Randy’s fashionable use came in the 1950s and 60s when it was often a Top 50 pick for little boys. As such, Randy is a distinctive mid-century name. It fell off the Top 100 in 1985 and has been going backwards on the charts ever since. Other similar 1950s styles of names (Larry, Terry, Jerry and Ricky) have had a similar experience on the charts. That is to say, they have become outdated in today’s naming fashions. Nicknames as names based on current trends are more about Jack, Sam, Max and Ben. One of the things to be aware of when it comes to the name Randy is that it’s a colloquial term in England for ‘horny’. Maybe that’s part of its charm for some parents. Who knows?
