Fines & Legal Issues

The most controversial time of Ray Lewis’ career was the 2000 nightclub incident in Atlanta, where two fatal stabbings took place. Lewis was at the scene of the crime, outside a Super Bowl party, and was arrested for murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault, along with two members of his party, Joseph Sweeting and Reginald Oakley.

Before the trial took place, Lewis accepted a plea deal for a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice. However, the agreement required Lewis to testify against Oakley and Sweeting. He was later served a 12-month probation sentence and subsequently fined $250,000 by the NFL.

After Lewis was cleared of the murder charges, the victims’ families filed civil lawsuits against the athlete. As far as the public is aware, Ray Lewis settled these lawsuits outside of court, reportedly paying both families $1 million. The incident resulted in Lewis directly losing $2.25 million, before even considering his legal fees, and lost revenues from potential sponsors.

Real Estate

In March 2003, Ray Lewis paid $1.95 million for a 6,592-square-foot, four-bedroom, eight-bathroom home in Reisterstown, Maryland. The property sits on 27.94 acres and features a billiards room, wellness center, gym, sauna, and pool house. In April 2017, Lewis began attempting to sell the property, initially seeking $2.95 million. He later reduced the price to $2.5 million, before letting it go in July 2018 for just $1.8 million.

The end result was that even after fifteen years of ownership, he still lost $150,000 on the list price. That’s also not including his property taxes (typically $15,000 per year) and agent commissions. All things considered, Lewis potentially lost between $400,000 and $500,000 overall.
