Have you ever experienced a sudden headache after crying hard? Along with throbbing pain, did you also notice puffy eyes, red face, and runny nose after shedding tears? If yes, do you know the reason behind this? Well, crying is normal and we shed tears in overwhelming situations to let our emotions out. But when it leads to worse situations like debilitating pain in the head, you must understand that it is a side-effect of triggered stress and anxiety because of intense emotions.
The headache never occurs when you cry due to extreme happiness. It only occurs when you shed tears due to negative emotions. The emotional accumulation leads to over secretion of stress hormone called cortisol, which stimulates neurotransmitters present in the brain and leads to post-crying symptoms mentioned above.
There are basically three types of headaches namely tension, migraine, and sinus headaches. The former is the most prevalent headache that occurs due to stress. It is characterised by stretching and tightening of muscles in the head, extreme head pain, and discomfort in neck and shoulders.
Migraine headache is the most debilitating headache. It causes pulsating and pounding pain mostly in one part of the head. In some cases, it also causes nausea, difficulty speaking, sensitivity to light and sound, and vomiting.

The accumulation of pressure inside the sinuses due to mucus is what causes a headache. It is accompanied by other symptoms including fever, runny nose, feeling of fullness in ears, swelling in the face, etc.
Though headaches go away on their own in most of the cases, you can try a few things when the condition is otherwise. You can rest in a dark and calm room. Also, you can consume ginger tea and drink a lot of water. Eating magnesium-rich food including green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, avocado, and banana can also be of good help. Certain over-the-counter medications can help too.
