Ever had that terrible moment when you realize, halfway through leaving a message, that you said something horribly stupid? This is a big bummer when you're trying to leave an important message, but as CNET reminds us, most cell phone carriers allow you to back out and rerecord messages.

This trick is as old as cell phones, but as voicemails get less common, it's easy to forget the option to rerecord exists. If you find yourself sounding like a doofus when you record your first message, all you have to do is hit a key depending on the recipients voicemail service:

Verizon: tap *

AT&T: tap *

Sprint: tap * or # then 3

T-Mobile: tap # then 3

So, next time you're leaving your boss that "I'm sick" voicemail, you can rerecord it until you get it right.
