2026 Red Ribbon Week Theme Announced

We’re thrilled to reveal the 2026 Red Ribbon Week theme, “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.™”, created by Ava Tackett, a student at Griswold Middle School in Griswold, Connecticut, with guidance from Health Teacher Kristen Butremavic. The theme highlights that choosing to live drug-free is an act of leadership and courage—and that everyday decisions can positively influence peers, families, and communities.

Red Ribbon Mondays:

Step into your hero moment and celebrate a drug-free life. This year, Red Ribbon Mondays shine a spotlight on everyday heroes who are making a difference by choosing to stay drug-free.

Each Monday, we’ll feature one of YOU showing how living drug-free is an act of leadership, courage, and positive influence. Share a short video telling us what being drug-free means to you and how your choices help inspire others at school, at home, and in your community.

Be a hero. Make a difference. Take the spotlight by completing our survey—we can’t wait to celebrate your story.

Grassroot Beginnings

Enrique "Kiki" Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. In honor of Kiki's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin. Parents then began to form coalitions using Camarena as their model while embracing his belief that one person can make a difference. These coalitions adopted the symbol of Camarena's memory, the Red Ribbon. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
