Regarding the use of the phrase "Don't shit where you eat" in the context of workplace dating, which part is the shitting and which part is the eating

Banned Oct 22, 2018 13,623 I often hear the phrase "don't shit where you eat" used as a warning not to date people you work with but for reasons I can't fully put into words it comes off weirdly to me. I can kind of wrap my head around it as a socialist who thinks jobs are bad and nobody should have one and that dating is nice and good that, like, shitting refers to 'being in the workplace' and eating refers to 'dating someone you're close to and find interesting'. I think it comes off weirdly to me because it analogizes relationships to be consumable items like food. That's the part I struggle with. Anyway, Happy Memorial Day Weekend, era!!

It's a great place that you know will consistently be there. That's your job for the most part. It's safe and consistent so why would you want to fuck that up? Let's say you really have to take a shit and you can't make it to the restroom. You had really spicy food and it's taking a toll on you. You decide, well, there's a lot of space here in the kitchen, and it's not a big deal. So you let it rip. But because you are incapable of picking up your own shit, it stays there and festers. You can't eat at your nice table without the smell looming over you. Your safe space is gone. It's not what it once was until someone cleans up that shit and let's your kitchen air out. It's just easier to burn down your house and start over somewhere else. That is what that phrase means. Spoiler Dating at the workplace is fine as long as you don't work in a shared area and hook up with people because they are there. Be two respectful adults and everything should be okay. OP OP

No, it means "don't fuck up a good thing on purpose". Shitting and eating are conscious decisions you make that shouldn't mix, since "shitting/fucking a coworker" can contaminate the "eating/making a living"

Also you'll hear don't dip your pen in the company ink. Same thing. I think it generally is advisable because people are fucking gossip hounds and if something doesn't work out for whatever reason there's a pretty good chance on everyone knowing all the deets.

He wasn't taking the saying too literally. He was literally thinking about it in a figurative way, like your explanation but inversed. Work sucks (shit) but my relationship at the moment is good (eating equates to happiness). Edit: I understand what the idiom means. I also think the OPs inversion is a funny harmless joke that I'd probably use in the future. Coworker: Don't shit where you eat. Me: Yeah work is pretty shitty.

You eat at work like you don't want your relationship going to shit, in the place where you eat work, assuming that's where you eat. So I think you got it backwards OP hence why it doesn't make sense. If a boss was to talk about his employees life stuff and the boss says "don't bring that shit here? Keep it at home?" Kind of like that.

So don't do things/don't get involve with things that may compromise your job/source of income is the basic meaning of the expression.

The idea is you don't date a co-worker because if you break up, they're always going to be there. Most relationships don't work out, and often those breakups don't leave both people feeling good about each other. That leaves you in a bad situation (personally and professionally), when you have to be with that person 40 hours a week. It's sound advice for most people.
