When Web Search is installed and Chrome launched, it will connect to a remote site and try to download a GIF file. This file may not exist, but in the response's HTTP headers will be URLs listed that the extension will use to redirect a user's search requests through.

The Web Search extension may then cause searches performed on search engines that include Bing, Google, Ask, AOL, SearchLock, and more to be redirected to one of the URLs retrieved from the remote site. These urls will then ultimately redirect the search to Yahoo.com, which will display the results.

The developers are most likely utilizing Yahoo.com in order to generate revenue from advertisements shown in the search results.
