The creators of Republic of Doyle are touting the Newfoundland landscape as an ideal place to shoot their newest series, Frontier.

Alex Patrick, John Vatcher and Perry Chafe will sit as executive producers of the historical series, which will follow the rise to power of a number of individuals vying to get rich in North America's fur trade.

Six episodes will be produced.

Patrick and Vatcher, who appeared on Here and Now Wednesday, say the series will be beautifully shot and action-packed.

"It's violent, it's brutish, it's everything people want to watch," Patrick told CBC's Debbie Cooper.

"We liken it to Game of Thrones in terms of the action, but also the physical beauty."

He said being from Newfoundland means they can easily access potential shooting locations.

"Our advantage is where Game of Thrones flies to different continents and spends a lot of money travelling, our back yard is as beautiful as it gets," he said.

"So we can shoot in 15 minutes away from where we live."

Plans to film in other areas of the province

Whereas Republic of Doyle was shot almost exclusively in the St. John's area, the creators say for Frontier they plan to showcase other regions of the province as well.

The new television series, Frontier, will include six hour-long episodes. Filming starts in July. (CBC)

"We're going to shoot obviously on the Avalon Peninsula," said Vatcher,

"Also a little foray over to the west coast, to see some of the beautiful scenery we've seen but were never able to get when we were doing Doyle."

The show will be using the same crew as Republic of Doyle, and Vatcher said the experience they built up through the years on that show will be invaluable for Frontier.

"They're all really chomping at the bit to be onto the next project," he said.

"What we can do after six years of Doyle is amazing, they're a well-classed crew now."
