ORIGIN Richard Simmons was an American fitness guru and television personality best known for his high-energy workout videos. He was born Milton Teagle Simmons on July 12, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Cor Jesu High School followed by the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Simmons later transferred to Florida State University and graduated with a degree in Art. He worked briefly as a waiter and advertiser.

CAREER Simmons struggled with obesity as a young man. His interest in fitness helped him to lose over 100 pounds. He created his own Beverly Hills gym, The Anatomy Asylum, which was later renamed ‘Slimmons’.

Simmons’s early success landed him a television appearance on Real People, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, and a recurring role on General Hospital. He was also known for hosting Slim Cookin, The Richard Simmons Show, and for being a frequent guest on The Howard Stern Show. Simmons’s line of products included the ‘Deal-A-Meal’ food program and the ‘Sweatin to the Oldies’ videos. He also released several fitness books, cookbooks, and self-help guides.

PERSONAL Richard Simmons died on July 13, 2024, at age 76. His reported cause of death was blunt traumatic injuries following a fall at his home two days prior. He was also suffering from heart disease.
