Ringo Starr 'miserable' He Can't Spend Christmas In UK With Family

Sir Ringo Starr is ‘miserable’ that he can’t join his family in the UK for Christmas due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 80-year-old is in Los Angeles with wife Barbara Bach and, like millions of others, will be unable to physically see his children and grandchildren over the festive period.

The Beatles legend – who is a father of three and a great-grandfather – told PA: ‘I’m not in England, I should be in England. I go for Christmas with the kids and my grandkids and that’s not happening.

‘So I had a few days of being miserable about that. And then you’ve got to get on. You just got to get up again and say, “well, let’s see what we can do today”. It’s no good sitting there being miserable for a long time, just odd moments.’

Sir Ringo is father to sons Zak, Jason and Lee from his marriage to his first wife Maureen Cox, and has eight grandchildren, including his first grandchild Tatia Jayne, who all live in the UK.

While many Brits are unable to get back to the UK for the festive period, new tier four restrictions mean that even those living in London and the south-east are unable to go back home for Christmas. 

Households are unable to mix over Christmas, with the tier four restrictions expected to be widened on Boxing Day.

This comes after Sir Ringo was forced to miss his in-person 80th birthday party in July.

The rock star usually stages a street party in Los Angeles every year for his birthday, but had to hold the event online instead this year.

At the time, he said that he had been at home for 11 weeks, only leaving the house for an early morning dog walk on weekends. 

Sir Ringo said: ‘This year and the beginning of this year have been really tough. I am disappointed and I’ve had a few down days.’

Earlier this week, Ringo’s Beatles bandmate Sir Paul McCartney discussed the rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine, and he is eager to get the jab.

The 78-year-old told The Sun: ‘I know we’ll come through this. It is great news about the vaccine. I’ll have it as soon as I’m allowed.

‘I’m a grandad and you don’t want grandad to collapse. You’ve got to stay strong, that’s all you can do, or you go under.’

Both remaining Beatles have this month marked the death of John Lennon, who was shot outside his New York apartment complex by Mark David Chapman in 1980.

Sir Paul wrote on Instagram: ‘A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. I will always be proud and happy to have known and worked with this incredible Scouser!’

Sir Ringo added: ‘Tuesday, 8 December 1980 we all had to say goodbye to John peace and love John. I’m asking Every music radio station in the world sometime today play Strawberry Fields Forever. Peace and love.’
