Career Overview
Ringo Starr became a worldwide star when he joined The Beatles after their original drummer, Pete Best, was fired. He first performed with the band in August 1962, though his replacement of Best was initially met with anger from Beatles fans. However, by November, fans had come to accept Starr, and many started to call for him to begin singing in the band’s songs.
With the band’s increasing popularity in Britain, it wasn’t long before Beatlemania crossed the pond, and in 1964, they’d become international hits. After performing on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles became some of the wealthiest rockstars in the world, with millions of fans worldwide.
An International Superstar
By late 1964, Ringo Starr had become one of the most popular members of The Beatles, with “I Love Ringo” lapel pins being a bestseller. When the band made their film debut in A Hard Day’s Night, Starr garnered the most praise from critics for his role. After their second film, Help!, Starr won a Melody Maker poll against his fellow band members for his performance.
In 1966, The Beatles released their seventh LP, Revolver, which included “Yellow Submarine,” their only no. 1 single where Starr was the lead singer. The following year, they released the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, where he sang lead on “With a Little Help from My Friends.”
A year later, they released The Beatles, more commonly known as the “White Album,” which was inspired by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. However, relations between members began to fall apart during the recording, with Starr becoming irritated by Paul McCarnety’s overbearing approach.
Similarly, members grew tired of Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s wife, hanging around almost constantly. In 1969, the band recorded “I Want You,” but a month later, they broke up after Lennon announced his departure.
Going Solo
After leaving The Beatles and releasing some of the best-selling albums of all time, Ringo Starr continued his career, often performing with other Beatles members. He performed on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, Living in the Material World, and Dark Horse albums.
Ringo released his debut solo album, Ringo, in 1973, and by 1974, he was releasing his fourth studio album, Goodnight Vienna. In 1975, he founded Ring O’ Records and, following Lennon’s murder in 1980, re-wrote “All Those Years Ago” as a tribute to his former bandmate.
Entering the 1990s, Ringo Starr made a cameo on The Simpsons and released his first album in nine years, titled Time Takes Time. In 1994, he collaborated with the remaining Beatles members on The Beatles Anthology project, recording two new songs together. Starr was inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame in 2002, and in 2009, he reunited with McCartney to perform at the David Lynch Foundation benefit concert.
In 2015, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and released his 18th studio album, Postcards from Paradise.
Recent Work
To celebrate his 80th birthday, Ringo Starr hosted a live-streamed concert featuring big names, including Dave Grohl and Willie Nelson. In 2020, he released the song “Here’s to the Nights” and the EP Change the World the following year. While he intended to return to touring, COVID-19 put a hold on his plans, and several of his shows were canceled after he tested positive.
Fortunately, he recovered and released the EP EP3 in 2022, followed by an announcement that he’d be touring from May to June 2023. After his tour, he released another EP, this time called Rewind Forward, which featured the single “Feeling the Sunlight,” written by Paul McCartney.
Garage Sale
In December 2015, Ringo Starr auctioned over 1,300 personal items through Julien’s Auctions, raising $9.2 million with standout sales, including his first Ludwig drum kit, used on Beatles classics like Can’t Buy Me Love and I Want to Hold Your Hand, which sold for $2.1 million.
Other highlights included Starr’s copy of The White Album, numbered 0000001, which fetched $790,000 as the most expensive vinyl ever sold, and a Rickenbacker guitar gifted by John Lennon that brought in $910,000.
Other significant items included a Patek Philippe Moonphase watch, which sold for $179,200, and several gold rings worn during Beatles performances, which fetched $100,000 each. Starr’s decision to part with these items helped to raise funds for the Lotus Foundation, the charity he and his wife, Barbara Bach, started. The Foundation supports causes such as substance abuse recovery, cancer research, and domestic violence prevention.
Starr shared that many of these items had been stored for decades, describing the auction as an opportunity to give them new homes while highlighting his importance in music history and reflecting his dedication to philanthropy.
