The Ryder Cup gets underway today (Friday) as Team Europe looks to retain the trophy it won in France three years ago. Whistling Straits, in Wisconsin, is the venue for this year's edition before the tournament returns to Europe for the 44th installment in 2023.

The biennial tournament has seen the venue flip to ensure each team gets to host every other edition, in a tradition dating right back to the very first Ryder Cup in 1927.

That competition was held in Massachusetts and saw an American team led by legend Walter Hagen claim a comfortable seven-point victory over an all-British side.

The change to allow European golfers to compete against the US alongside their British counterparts from 1979 opened the door for courses in mainland Europe to host the competition.

But it took 18 years for that to happen for the first time, when Seve Ballesteros led his side to a narrow victory at Valderrama, Spain in 1997.

It was another two decades until it happened again – the last Ryder Cup in 2018, held at Le Golf National near Paris, was only the second to be hosted at a course in mainland Europe.

The wait for that to happen again will not be so long this time, as Italy will be hosting the competition for the first time.

The 2023 Ryder Cup will be held at the Marco Simone Golf Club on the outskirts of the capital Rome.

It had been originally scheduled to take place in 2022, but like this year's event it was pushed back a year to maintain the two-year gap between events.

The course is named after the 1,000-year-old fortified castle it was built around.

Several holes on the course offer a view of the dome of St Peter's Basilica, the famous church which sits in the heart of Vatican City.

A presale was held this week for avid fans who wanted to book their spot at the course early, and the weekly tickets that were made available sold out in just two days "following record remand".

Remaining day tickets will be sold through a ballot process which will run next year, while there are also premium and hospitality packages available.

"For individual general admission day tickets, a ballot will take place in 2022 and you will be the first in line to hear about key dates and information," Ryder Cup Europe confirmed.
