Samsung HE Washer - OK to add Detergent DIRECTLY?

I own a Samsung HE washer. It has a detergent drawer for both wash and pre-wash, along with a bleach and frabric softener holder. These are normally added to the drawer before the wash cycle begins and the washer will use it accordingly. We've had some issues with powder detergent clogging the tubing from the detergent drawer to the drum. Obviously we could switch to liquid detergent but powder works best for us. My question: Is it ok to simply add the powder detergent old-school style directly into the load within the drum bypassing the tubing system? Could this harm my HE washer? From what i can tell, the washer begins the cycle with weight sensing, after that it begins the pre-wash (if set), then wash. To me it seems i can simply throw in the powder detergent directly on the clothes. Thanks

Are you using HE compatible powder? The liquid works much better in these HE machines.

I don't understand why people use powder *at all* - It can clog up the dispensing mechanism - It can clump on your clothes leaving white stuff on them - It does not clean as well as liquid sinc eit doesn't mix evenly, especially in HE where they use so little water And finally, it is not even cheaper! If you get liquid detergent at a decent price then it is not even cheaper than name-brand powder. FTR we use the Kirkland Signature HE detergent. It is a 140 load container for $8 or $9 or something, ridiculously cheap, and performs awesome. You can even get it in scent free, which my wife requires. To be nobody but yourself - in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting. -- E. The original poster finds that it works better for him. That's his opinion, just like what you have stated above is your opinion. You have to understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and just because it's different than yours doesn't make it wrong (or right).

If clogging his/her expensive washer is the BETTER solution (not to mention all the cons people have posted). I'm afraid to ask how bad the liquid solution is. I can understand wanting to use up the old powered detegent before switching to liquid. I'm cheap that way too, but in this case, I'd just give it to someone who had a conventional washer. My sister gave us her big big big box of powered detergent when she moved and got one of these fancy new washers. This space for rent

enwhyRFD Deal Fanatic Dec 31, 2007 5442 posts 2119 upvotes Richmond Hill HE detergent is designed differently than non-HE detergent - mainly to not as foam as much. So if you use HE powdered detergent, I don't see any issues with adding it directly to the drum when your throw your clothes in. I have a HE LG, and although I use Tide's liquid HE detergent, I sometimes add the stain release powder to the clothes directly in the drum. It's the same concept if you use the stain release gel packs - you don't put that in the dispenser - you'd put that with your clothes. LOL if you tried to put it in the dispenser that would be a major clog.

Neil Deal Addict Aug 24, 2002 3569 posts 43 upvotes I'm speculating here.... Maybe the OP has (like me) a supply of expensive HE powder they'd rather not discard. I've successfully used the HE powder in Kenmore (Whirlpool?) front loaders but soon switching to Samsung VRT. Whether you can just throw the powder in with the washer I don't know. My guess is it would work as long as it's only a pre-soak (not a pre-rinse that would wash detergent away before wash cycle). I think having the powder pre-wetted in the provided drawer would be best, as it would have started dissolving by the time it reaches the drum. But OP is saying they're having problems with it plugging which kind makes me worry if that's something I'll experience too. If that pathway gets plugged I could picture water leaving the machine that's not supposed to! I hope it's just that OP isn't using the proper HE rated detergent.

quantass [OP] Member May 22, 2008 312 posts Yes I'm using HE powder detergent (Ultra Sunlight HE Concentrated). Ideally i would like to use it all up to justify the original cost. We have used liquid HE as well but it just doesnt work as well. When using the powder the first 3 loads are superior to liquid but gradually the clogging builds up and the cleaning performance between the 2 is equal. I'm going to try tossing in the HE powder directly into the drum and watch the onscreen display. I'm confident it states Pre-wash / Wash as the first stage. If this process doesnt work then i will give in to liquid and perhaps locate a better brand -- Tide?

Xeros Deal Addict User avatar Jun 2, 2009 2090 posts 95 upvotes Toronto Why don't you just alternate liquid and powder? You said the first couple of loads of powder work until it clogs, at which point you switch to liquid to rinse out the clogs, then repeat?
