Background

Saweetie was born on July 2, 1993, in Santa Clara, California. She had a close relationship with her grandmother, who gave her the nickname ‘Saweetie,’ which she later adopted as her stage name. She was born in Santa Clara but later moved to other cities to complete her education and graduate.

She shared a home with her parents and two younger sisters, Maya and Milan, who are twins. She spent the majority of her early years in the San Francisco Bay Area, which was the epicenter of rap music at the time. Popular female rappers such as Nicki Minaj, Trina, Lil’ Kim, and Foxy Brown influenced her.

She became interested in music at a young age and her enthusiasm grew even stronger when she began writing poems and performing at open mics. This experience aided her in the composition of her own songs. She began recording music when she was only 15 years old.

Saweetie was inspired by female rappers and she regularly shared her short rap videos on Instagram. She became an internet sensation overnight, after her rap video set to the beats of Khia’s classic ‘My Neck, My Back’ went viral. In the summer of 2016, the song was first made available on SoundCloud, and its video was later released and uploaded on YouTube. As of March 2017, it had received 10 million views.

On March 16, 2018, Saweetie released her first major-label E.P., “High Maintenance,” which included nine songs. Saweetie has released three E.P.s, 19 singles (eight of which are features), and 19 music videos since beginning her professional career.

Her chart-topping singles ‘Icy Grl’ and ‘My Type’ have gone 1x platinum and 2x platinum, respectively. Saweetie doesn’t seem to be slowing down despite her success: “Pretty B*tch Music,” her debut album, is set to be released in 2022 and features her already-hit singles ‘Tap In’ and ‘Back to the Streets.’ “High Maintenance,” Saweetie’s debut E.P., peaked at 32 on the R&B/Hip-Hop sales chart in the United States.

Saweetie and Keith Powers dated for about four years, before breaking up in 2014. She took some time off after the breakup before starting a relationship with Diddy’s son Justin Combs in 2016. It is unclear how long the couple dated, but Saweetie seemed to address the breakup in her 2018 track ‘B.A.N.,’ in which she writes about a man leaving her for another woman.

Quavo and Saweetie were first linked in the summer of 2018, and they later confirmed that their romance began when the Migos member slid into her D.M.s. This relationship was officially confirmed in a 2020 interview where Quavo revealed that the D.M. he sent led to a real romantic connection with Saweetie. Sadly, the couple ended things in March 2021, confirmed by a tweet from Saweetie’s verified account. Dating rumors have since linked her with artists such as James Harden and J. Cole.

Not only is Saweetie a well-known rapper but she also ventured into the T.V. industry, playing Indigo in “Grown-ish” in 2021.
