How to greet people in Vietnam[edit | edit source]
If you are planning a trip to Vietnam, even if you don't speak the local language, it is always good to know how to address your interlocutor. Here, respect is required, especially towards his elder. In order to set the record straight, here are some simple rules.
- Hello is chào. Goodbye is "tạm biệt" but we mostly hear chào.
- Thank you is cám ơn
- To call someone, like the waitress: cô ới!
➡ If you are a passing tourist, you will have little to worry about. To say hello to someone you don't know for example the local sandwich seller:
- Chào chú
- Chào anh (if the person can be the age of your older brother)
➡ If it is a woman:
- Chào cô (madam, mademoiselle) / Chào chị (if this person can be the age of your big sister).
- Chào em (if this person can be the age of your little brother or sister)
➡ If you are in doubt, chú and cô are universal for strangers.
➡ if it is an elderly person whom you do not know: Chào ông (for a man) / Chào bà (for a woman)
