Scientific notation is a way to express very large or very small numbers more simply, as the product of a number between $1$ and $10$ and a power of 10.

Important Notes

  • When a positive number greater than or equal to $10$ is written in scientific notation, the power of 10 used is positive.
  • When the number is less than $1$, the power of 10 used is negative.
  • The exponent in scientific notation indicates the number of places the decimal point is moved.
  • Positive powers of 10 indicate large numbers.
  • Negative powers of 10 indicate small numbers.

Mathematical Notation

$10^n$ means move the decimal point $n$ places to the right$10^{-n}$ means move the decimal point $n$ places to the leftRemember to use proper notation when solving problems
