How to Convert Seconds to Milliseconds

To convert a measurement in seconds to a measurement in milliseconds, multiply the time by the following conversion ratio: 1,000 milliseconds/second.

Since one second is equal to 1,000 milliseconds, you can use this simple formula to convert:

milliseconds = seconds × 1,000

The time in milliseconds is equal to the time in seconds multiplied by 1,000.

For example, here's how to convert 5 seconds to milliseconds using the formula above.

milliseconds = (5 s × 1,000) = 5,000 ms

How Many Milliseconds Are in a Second?

There are 1,000 milliseconds in a second, which is why we use this value in the formula above.

1 s = 1,000 ms

Seconds and milliseconds are both units used to measure time. Keep reading to learn more about each unit of measure.

What Is a Second?

The second has historically been defined as 1/60 of a minute or 1/86,400 of a day. According to the SI definition, the second is the duration of 9,192,631,770 oscillations of the frequency of light emitted from the atomic transition between the two hyperfine levels of the unperturbed ground state of the caesium 133 atom.[1]

The second is the SI base unit for time in the metric system. Seconds can be abbreviated as s, and are also sometimes abbreviated as sec. For example, 1 second can be written as 1 s or 1 sec.

What Is a Millisecond?

One millisecond is equal to 1/1,000 of a second or 1,000 microseconds.

The millisecond is a multiple of the second, which is the SI base unit for time. In the metric system, "milli" is the prefix for thousandths, or 10-3. Milliseconds can be abbreviated as ms; for example, 1 millisecond can be written as 1 ms.
