5 Tips for Planting Grass Seed for Your Lawn in Fort Collins, CO

Planting grass seed is an affordable and easy way to make your lawn green and beautiful during the warmer months of the year. However, not all yards are the same when  it comes to establishing and maintaining a lush, green landscape. Unfortunately, many homeowners select the wrong grass to plant, as well as the wrong time of year for seeding. Here are some important tips for planting grass seed on your lawn that will help with your landscaping project in Fort Collins or Loveland.

Select the Most Optimal Times in the Year

The best times of the year to plant grass seed are in the spring and fall. However, the Fort Collins climate plays a big role when selecting the most optimal time to seed your lawn. For example, if you live in a cooler climate, plant grass seed when your average daily temperature is between 60 and 75 degrees. However, if you live in a hotter climate, wait until temperatures are around 80 degrees. You can search online to find out when the best time to plant grass based on where you live.

For the Northern Colorado area, Colorado State recommends:

“Seed cool-season grasses (bluegrass, ryegrass, fescues) anytime from March through September. Along the Front Range and Western Slope the optimal time is mid-August to mid-September. Seed warm-season grasses (buffalograss, blue grama) April through July. Seeding after July is not recommended.”

Climate also plays a big role when it comes to selecting the best grass to plant in your yard. Depending on where you live – and your average summer temperatures – you will either need a grass seed that grows well in a cool or a hot climate. If you plan to just fill in some bare spots, use a rake to remove a couple inches of soil where you intend to seed your yard. However, if you plan to seed your entire lawn, you will need to completely remove the old turf. Make sure that the surface of your soil is smooth. Also, for a lush, green landscape, you will need to add nutrients and fertilizer to the soil before seeding.

Planting Grass Seed

For the best results, use a seeder to spread grass seed over your lawn. A seeder will spread the grass seed more evenly across your yard than any other method – like using your hands or a container. You will need to read the instructions for your grass seed to determine how much to plant. Then, select the appropriate setting on your seeder to spread the correct amount of seed over your lawn.

Maintaining Your Lawn
