Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were one of the 'it' couples while they were dating, though it didn't end the best way possible.

At least that's what Gomez thinks. The actress and singer recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and opened up about she felt after the breakup, what she got out of the relationship and how it helped her grow.

The 29-year-old is more at peace with herself, stating that her breakup with Bieber allowed her to do some "soul searching".

"I was, you know, obviously going through a really tough breakup and then I was left with the question of my career and where am I gonna go and what's gonna happen?," Gomez said. "It just was all of these different things I was feeling."

However, that's also when the music star began to develop some unexpected health issues.

"Then my medical stuff kind of kicked in - I was dealing with my lupus and some kidney problems," said Gomez. "It was actually really hard."

Nevertheless, Gomez believes she's a stronger person for having gone through those experiences.

"It allowed me to develop a character where I don't tolerate any sort of nonsense or disrespect in any way and I'm really proud of how I came out of it," she said.

Her Disney past

Gomez also noted how here time as a Disney star made it hard for fans to take her seriously on 'The Wizards of Waverly Place'.

"I felt like it was very hard for people to take me seriously," she said. "Little by little I have been overcoming that and I am very happy, but it was very frustrating. It felt like a mockery."
