The three principal ethnic groups Serbs, Croats and Bosnians all speak languages that are varieties of the same southern Slavic language. The Serbs speak Serbian which is written in the Latin and Cyrillic alphabet, while the Croats use Croatian and the Bosnians use Bosnian, both of which are written in the Roman alphabet. Approximately 18% of the population speaks Albanian. Today the official language is Serbian, thought to be spoken by around 70% of the population.
