Have you ever seen a shooting star? Have you ever had a shooting star lead you to a magical new world? That’s what happens to Stanley, Quinn and Finn in Laurie Berkner’s Pillowland! Keep reading for seven out of this world facts about shooting stars.
1. Shooting stars are extremely fast, reaching speeds of over 120,000 miles per hour!
2. The temperature of a shooting star is around 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. Scientist study shooting stars to predict the weather and to understand the atmosphere.
4. The sizes of shooting stars vary, but they all become significantly smaller as they fall through the atmosphere
5. Shooting stars are occur all the time, even during the day, but the best time to see one is at night.
6. The colors of a shooting star may also indicate the minerals that make up the space rock. Different elements emit different-colored light when they burn. Iron, one of the most common elements found in meteors, glows yellow.7. Shooting stars are not stars at all! They are small rocks and dust that shoot through space towards the Earth called meteoroids or meteorites.
