Sharpies And Smell: How High Can You Really Get - Pplwhomatter

It goes without saying that all drugs are bad, but some are far worse than others. While cocaine, meth, and heroin are known as the worst street drugs, I’ve recently noticed that synthetic drugs are increasing in popularity. The homemade drug krokodil is known to eat away flesh from the inside out, while bath salts have been making recent news due to their ability to cause hallucination and aggressive behavior.
If that’s not scary enough, there are dozens of other household items that children and teens have been using and abusing to get high. I recently heard from one teen that the most common and undetectable way to get a homemade high involves the simple use of a marker.
A sharpie marker contains many chemicals that help give the ink the permanent lasting abilities the brand is known for. Unfortunately, these chemicals can also cause a short-lived high in those who know how to abuse it.
I learned that abusing a sharpie is as simple as huffing the product repeatedly. This is most commonly done by sticking the inked end under or in the nostril and inhaling deeply several times. Other popular methods include rubbing sharpie on cloth and holding it over the mouth and nose, or stick a sharpie stained cloth inside the mouth.
Sharpies, which are known as an inhalant, have a stimulating effect on the body that is always short lived. The chemicals start to work immediately killing off brain cells and starving the brain of much needed oxygen. This causes the abuser to feel lightheaded, dizzy, and high. If the person continues to inhale even after this point, they may begin to feel giddy and extremely out of it. Many teens who abuse the markers for too long lose the ability to walk and end up passing out due to lack of oxygen to the brain.
Like all drugs, the high from a sharpie is different for everyone. While a ‘happy high’ is usually reported, I heard from several teens that became agitated, violent, or paranoid. Inhalants are also be extremely dangerous since they prevent the user from getting the oxygen that their body desperately needs.

In most cases, those who abuse sharpies will pass out and wake a short while later. Unfortunately, there have also been many cases where children or teens die suddenly from suffocation. Even if death doesn’t occur, inhalants are extremely toxic to the brain. If abused over a longer period of time, children and teens may lose the ability to live a normal life later on.
If parents suspect that their child is inhaling sharpies to get high, I highly recommend that they contact one of the many los angeles drug rehab facilities such as VN Treatment before permanent damage is done.
