Post by kortoso on Jun 27, 2019 2:12:13 GMT (There are other threads on this, but they are all fairly old.)I have a box full of swords in California, USA, consisting of an antique katana, an antique wakizashi, and an Atrim type XIII and an Atrim type X. They are packed and ready to go. The last time I was in the US, I intended to add the box to my luggage flying back to Thailand, since the airline's charge for this seemed lower than any regular shipping company. But a friend of mine, who has many years experience in international shipping, tariffs and duties, warned me to check out everything before shipping, else see these heirlooms confiscated.Anyway, I am looking into Thai customs, what they require and what I can safely get away with.I'm looking for a reputable, inexpensive shipping company that does door-to-door international shipments. DHL is starting to look good. For those of us who have shipped swords internationally, what service so you normally use? Thanks! | | Last Edit: Jun 27, 2019 2:13:07 GMT by kortoso

Any issues with customs? For the description of contents, do you simply say "swords" or "wall decorations" or "weapons of war"?

Post by pgandy on Jul 11, 2019 12:24:23 GMT I did not respond because our countries are different, so different regs can be expected. I am in Costa Rica and so for as how I declare my swords with customs; I simply declare them as “unsharpened copies of...” and since doing so have had no issues. Before doing that I had to go through hell and high water and even had to hire a lawyer at times to assist, and yet at other times a sharpened sword such as a rapier or katana would come through without a hitch. There seemed to be no standard but depended on whomever and how they were feeling that day determined the outcome. But since declaring them as “unsharpened copies” things have been going smoothly. Hope this helps. As for as the carrier I've had no issues but use a freight forwarder. | | Last Edit: Jul 11, 2019 16:27:38 GMT by pgandy

Are you in Thailand? From here in Thailand, I can talk to antiques dealers and so on, but they only know about regulations re Thai antiquities, rather than things coming from outside. I contacted the "Customs Call Center" and they merely referred me to regulations re the Defence Industry Department and the Fine Art Department. But yes, one of the safest bets is to categorize them as "Wall Hangers" although at least two will not hang there for long.
