Shit On The Shingle
Maybe your like
There are a few versions of this classic recipe, but this one is close to what I grew up with. The main ingredient, dried beef, might be hard to find in some areas. On the east coast my mom would buy it at the meat counter. Now on the west coast, I can only find the Hormel brand in a jar (Walmart). Make sure you rinse meat under cold water prior to cooking to remove the overly salty taste.

Mom made us that growing up and I tried making it now 40 years later a while ago and used a recipe similar but did not know to rinse the beef. I had to use the jar stuff and that was almost terrible. I told wife I don’t understand it. Mom made this one all the time and don’t remember it being like this. Wife said I dont know but we never made it again. I searched and you popped up typing in shit on a shingle and saw the rinsing trick. I never would have figured it out. Thank you for saving memories. That’s in my opinion is necessity not optional. But maybe some prefer it salty? My Mom must have known. I gave up tho. Thank you!

Agree. I like salty but its a little much right out of the jar. Need to back it off a little.

“Shit on THE shingle”? The name of this dish, always, forever, and everywhere, is shit on _A_ shingle. Square yourself away, and stop sullying the name of this incomparable military Food of the Gods. Now: PUSH-UPS. BEGIN.

hahahaha. My Mee-Maw would make it and the rue was a little darker than what my mom did. My wife and kids love this. I use the carl buddig’s chipped beef. Family is originally from the south and I am in MD. Cracked pepper on top. Guess I have to make some fir dinner.

We just had for breakfast and so yummy!! Mom made for us and she got the receipt from Daddy when he was in WWII and Korean War. I carried it on along with my brother when he and my husband were in Vietnam. It’s now a favorite go to a couple times a year for a lite breakfast or dinner. PS Don’t forget to rinse meat or it will be too salty!!

When I was in the Army in 1967, we had this dish with ground beef and, although the GI’s joked about it being terrible, they always seemed to have a clean plate…my mom used to use chipped beef in her gravy…

[…] Yes, you can use ground beef instead of dried beef. However, you’ll need to adjust the seasoning accordingly. Ground beef tends to be less salty than dried beef, so consider adding a bit more salt or other spices to match the flavor profile. For more seasoning tips, check out this guide. […]
