Shoulder Season

What is the meaning / definition of Shoulder Season in the hospitality industry?

A hotel’s booking season that is between high season and low season. Shoulder seasons have less crowds, but have some of the same advantages of peak seasons, like whether, attractions and amenities. Shoulder seasons usually occur a month or two before or after high season.

Unlike low season, where the weather might be unfavourable and shops may be closed, shoulder seasons offers guests many perks that are expected in high season times at a reduced cost. It also allows visitors to experience the region or hotel with less crowds. Some regions also host events and festivals in shoulder seasons to attract visitors.

On the other hand, shoulder seasons may not have great weather like peak season and may have less tourist attractions. In some areas it is common to have reduced operating hours of establishments and museums because of the lower demand.

Shoulder seasons occur differently depending on the region and tourist attraction. For example, a Cancun resort’s shoulder season occurs in early December, but a hotel located in the Swiss-alps has their peak season at this time. Generally speaking shoulder season in Ski Resorts occurs in warmer winter months such as March, April and November.
