Having released a new movie every three years between 2001 and 2010, Shrek fans have been left waiting far too long for the fifth instalment of the franchise.

There is good news, though. Work is finally underway on 'Shrek 5' again, which could soon be hitting the silver screens.

The 'Shrek 5' release date

No release date has been confirmed yet, despite 'Shrek 4' having been released back in 2010.

Work on 'Shrek 5' began in 2016, originally aiming for a 2019 release, but that has now been pushed back and most expect that it could be released in late 2022, somewhere between September and November.

The plot of 'Shrek 5'

Michael McCullers, the man behind 'The Boss Baby' and 'Austin Powers', worked on the script and confirmed in 2020 that it had been completed, but no details on the plot itself have been revealed just yet.

"I finished that script which I really, really, really love," he told CinemaBlend. "It's really personal to me. It's got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can't really reveal."

Despite that, it is expected that the film will follow the same kind of approach as the previous films, only with new twists to engage fans of the hits from the noughties as well as new viewers.

The characters and likely voice cast for 'Shrek 5'

The idea behind 'Shrek 5' is to reinvigorate the franchise by relying on the same core characters, with several actors hinting at their involvement.

New features could come in, but, with no details on the plot itself, that is hard to tell until we at least see the first trailers.

One interesting casting decision concerns the fact that Cameron Diaz retired from acting in 2014, which means that if Princess Fiona does return then it could be with an entirely new voice.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas are all expected to return, as producers look to stick as close to the original cast as possible.
