1 Open the After Effects project you want to edit. Find and double-click the video project you want to trim to open it in After Effects.

2 Drag and drop the video clip in the Composition area. Hold down the video clip you want to cut in the "Project" box on the top-left, and drag it to the "Composition" box at the bottom of the window.
- If you want to add a new video to your project, click the File tab on the top-left, and select Import on the menu. This will allow you to select a video, and add it to your After Effects project.

3 Drag and place the Time Ruler to where you want to cut the clip. Click the blue or yellow ruler head at the top of the timeline, and position it anywhere on the video clip.
- The Time Ruler looks like a vertical line on the video timeline at the bottom.
- You'll see a preview of the exact video shot as you drag the Time Ruler on the video timeline.

4 Click the Edit tab on the top-left. This button is in the upper-left corner of your screen. It will open your editing options on a drop-down menu.

5 Click Split Layer on the Edit menu. This will split your video clip where the Time Ruler is positioned, and move the beginning of your video clip to a new layer in the Composition timeline.
- If you want to use a keyboard shortcut, press ⌘ Command+⇧ Shift+D on Mac or Control+⇧ Shift+D on Windows.

6 Drag the Time Ruler to where you want your clip to end. Click the blue or yellow ruler head at the top of the timeline, and move it to your final shot in the video clip.

7 Click the Edit tab. It's in the upper-left corner of your screen. It will open your editing menu. -
8 Click Split Layer on the menu. This will split your video clip again, and move it to another layer in the timeline.

9 Find the "Work Area Start" slider at the top of the Composition timeline. This is a blue or yellow slider in the upper-left corner of your video timeline. It marks the beginning of your composition's active work area. - You'll see a tag message saying "Work Area Start" when you hover over the slider here.

10 Drag the "Work Area Start" slider to the beginning of the clip. This will allow you to set the limits of your working area in the composition timeline, and trim the video.

11 Find the "Work Area End" slider on the top-right of the timeline. This is a blue or yellow slider like "Work Area Start" above the video timeline. It marks the end of your composition's active work area. -
12 Drag the "Work Area End" slider to the end of the clip. This will allow you to set the working area limits from both ends.

13 Right-click inside the Work Area above the Composition timeline. Your Work Area is highlighted between the "Work Area Start" and "Work Area End" sliders above your video timeline. -
14 Select Trim Comp to Work Area on the right-click menu. This will trim your video clip, and remove everything outside of the Work Area sliders from the composition.
- If you don't see this option, make sure you right-click inside the Work Area here. You won't see this option if you right-click on the timeline.
