Liu’s first job after college was at an accounting firm, but he was laid off after working there for less than a year. Liu then decided to go into acting. His early career included bit parts in several Canadian television shows and recurring roles in the science-fiction action series Omega (2013) and in the crime drama Blood and Water in 2015. Liu also had a few jobs as a stunt performer. His big break came in 2016, when he was cast in the Canadian television sitcom Kim’s Convenience. He played Jung Kim, the son of a Korean Canadian family that runs a convenience store. Liu had other jobs and interests in addition to acting. In 2014 he posed as a stock photo model—most notably as an office worker—and his image appeared in advertisements, pamphlets, and textbooks. He wrote, directed, and coproduced the short films Open Gym (2013) and Crimson Defender vs. The Slightly Racist Family (2015). Liu also wrote and produced some of the episodes of the television show Hello (Again), which aired in 2022. In 2018 he founded a film production company called 4:12 Entertainment, which focused on stories about Asian American experiences. Liu also wrote the memoir We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story (2022).
