JACKSON, NJ — Six Flags Hurricane Harbor will not sell any more single-day tickets for the 2021 season, and is requiring season passholders and members to make reservations before coming to the park.

The change in ticketing policies for the water park begins Thursday, and was announced in an email to season pass and membership holders on Monday and in posts on the Six Flags website and Facebook page.

"Given the extreme heat this summer, our waterpark has been very busy and often reaches capacity," said Kristin B. Fitzgerald, a park spokeswoman. "Sadly, we have had to turn guests away. Therefore, we made the decision to limit attendance to only members and season pass holders for the remainder of the season as they are our most loyal guests."

"In addition, we re-implemented reservations. This will ensure that those who plan to visit are able to enjoy their day," she said.

People who previously purchased daily tickets may visit on the date printed on their ticket but no more daily tickets will be sold after Wednesday, Fitzgerald said. Season passes and memberships still can be purchased, she said.

Great Adventure does not require reservations; the Wild Safari does and has required reservations since they were implemented last season.

The high demand at the parks has led to heavy traffic jamming Route 537/Monmouth Road, which leads to the park, every weekend in 2021.

"We are WELL aware of the heavy traffic in Rt. 537/Monmouth Road leading to Six Flags Great Adventure. It’s that time of that year," Jackson Township police said in a June 7 post on the department's Facebook page.

The police department was overwhelmed with 911 calls reporting the traffic that day, the post said.

"Everyone is doing the best they can to accommodate everyone and get everyone in and out safely," police said.

In the weeks since, continued severe traffic tieups have been reported. Ocean County Scanner News has posted photos of people making illegal turns and blocking traffic in their attempts to get into the park.

A security incident Monday led to the main entrance being closed for several hours, but that did not play a role in the ticketing changes.

The park's website notes that reservations are required as of Thursday. People who bought one-day tickets prior to Monday's announcement can use them to make reservations, the park's website said.

"Hurricane Harbor is reserved for our Season Pass Holders and Members," a statement on the website says. "Those with existing one-day tickets may visit on the date of their ticket as long as reservations are made prior to visit."

Hurricane Harbor is open seven days a week through Sept. 5 and open Sept. 11-12 before closing for the season.
