Synopsis
High school student Reki Kyan is passionate about one thing: skateboarding. When night falls, he heads to "S," an illegal underground race inside a mine where skaters compete in highly dangerous situations. After a loss that results in his skateboard being destroyed and his arm being broken, Reki is now incapable of practicing at all. While working, Reki runs into his new classmate, Langa Hasegawa, a half-Canadian and half-Japanese boy with no skateboarding experience whatsoever. Langa is in desperate need of money. After they both visit "S" when tasked by Reki's boss, they get into trouble and are forced into a bet that requires Langa to skate in a race. However, the mysterious transfer student holds a trump card that Reki is unaware of, one which might help him win the race in the most unexpected way. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

The friendship between Reki and Langa flows naturally, growing from lighthearted banter to a deeper connection that, depending on your lens, could blur the line between platonic and romantic. The underground skate scene of “S” is full of color and personality, but the show rarely slows down to flesh out its world. Rules, rivalries, and community culture are more hinted at than deeply built. The pacing often feels rushed, with emotional conflicts resolved in a single conversation and tonal shifts that swing from heartfelt drama to outlandish comedy ...in seconds. Structurally, the focus sometimes drifts, spending more time on over-the-top moments than letting key character beats breathe. The antagonist is memorable, larger-than-life, and undeniably entertaining, though his theatrics can tip into distraction. Visually, the anime thrives on saturated colors, dynamic camera angles, and fluid skate sequences that make every race feel cinematic. The soundtrack blends upbeat rock and electronic beats that match the sport’s energy, while the voice cast sells both the comedic banter and the emotional vulnerability with equal conviction. It’s not a narratively tight show, but it knows how to make you care. The moral undertones about pursuing your passion, embracing friendship, and facing your insecurities, come through even when the plot wobbles. Enjoyment is easy; you can just let it sweep you along. As for rewatch value, it’s high if you’re in it for the skate battles and character chemistry, less so if you’re chasing a meticulously built story. If you’re not looking for realism and just want a fun, heart-driven ride with flashes of sincerity and flair, SK8 offers that, even if it’s a little messy along the way. It feels like the studio didn't research skateboarding and the culture and created a story about what they thought skateboarders were like. The plot was lacklustre. The anime did nothing terrible, but it did nothing great either. The only decent things were the art and animation. Nothing was interesting about the characters. The MC is the generic, overly energetic protagonist. The deuteragonist is the stereotypical emotionless and "cooler" character and probably the most interesting character in the show, which says a lot about the rest. And the villain is basically just Hisoka from Walmart. Also, this one's more of ...a personal preference, but as a Christian, I was not fond of the Adam and Eve comparisons in the later episodes. Even objectively, the Adam and Eve metaphors were pointless, didn't make much sense and failed to add extra substance to the characters and the overarching story. If you were like me and wanted to watch this anime because you are into skateboarding, you should save your time and not watch it. If you wish to watch it for the story and don't care about how realistic the skateboarding is, it would probably be more bearable... but you should also save your time and find something with a more intriguing plot.
