Snapchat Notifications Not Working? Here's How You Can Fix Them

Snapchat notifications are essential for staying on top of new Snaps and direct messages — so what should you do when these notifications aren't working? Snapchat — like any app — isn't perfect. Sometimes, things with Snapchat go wrong. The infamous 'Snapchat is a camera app' error plagues users when there's an issue with Snapchat's camera permissions. Snapchat has also faced bug-ridden updates and various server issues, which have caused other kinds of inconsistencies with the app.

Another Snapchat issue that many users have encountered is broken notifications. Notifications are essential if you want to stay on top of your Snapchat activity. Whether you get a new message, photo, or group chat, notifications let you know about them the second they're received. At least that's how it's supposed to work. If your Snapchat notifications aren't working, and you aren't sure why, here are a few tips on fixing them.

More likely than anything else, Snapchat notifications probably aren't working because of a permissions issue with your smartphone. If you accidentally revoked those permissions at one point — or never granted them in the first place — your smartphone is preventing Snapchat from sending notifications. If you have an iPhone, you can enable Snapchat permissions as follows:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down the page and tap 'Snapchat.'
  • Tap 'Notifications.'
  • Tap the 'Allow Notifications' toggle if it isn't already enabled.
  • Change the Notification Delivery to 'Immediate Delivery.'
  • Make sure Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners all have checks next to them.

The steps are pretty similar for Android. If you have an Android smartphone, here's how you'll enable Snapchat notification permissions: Open the Settings app, tap 'Notifications,' scroll down the page, tap 'Snapchat, and make sure 'Allow notifications' is turned on.

Once Snapchat notifications are enabled in your smartphone settings, you'll need to double-check that your Snapchat settings are also properly configured. Here's what that process looks like:

  • Open the Snapchat app.
  • Tap your profile icon in the top left corner.
  • Tap the settings icon in the top right.
  • Tap 'Notifications.'
  • Tap the toggles next to all the notifications you want to get.

In most cases, following these steps should fix your broken Snapchat notifications and get them working again. Enable notifications in your phone's settings, enable the notifications you want in the Snapchat app, and that should be the ticket to fixing Snapchat notifications.

As is often the case in the tech world, things don't always go according to plan. If your Snapchat notifications still aren't working, there are a couple of other things you can try. If you have an iPhone, the answer could be that there's an issue with Snapchat's background app refresh settings. Open the Settings app, tap 'General,' tap 'Background App Refresh,' scroll down until you find Snapchat, and make sure the toggle is turned on. Background app refresh lets Snapchat refresh data in the background, and if it's turned off, notifications may not work even with the other settings enabled correctly.

If your Snapchat notifications still aren't working, you may need to clear Snapchat's app cache. The app cache saves temporary files to your device to help Snapchat load faster. However, it can also cause issues with notifications and other features if something goes wrong. To clear your Snapchat cache on iPhone and Android, simply open the Snapchat app, tap the profile icon, tap the settings icon, scroll down, tap 'Clear Data,' then 'Clear Cache,' and tap 'Clear' again to confirm your action.

Should all of the above fail, it may be that your Snapchat application is running outdated software. Open the App Store or Google Play Store on your device, check for any available updates, and download them if they're available. If there's still no improvement, you can always try uninstalling Snapchat from your phone and re-installing it.

If Snapchat notifications don't appear for a particular friend or group, it's worth checking if this has been disabled. To do this for an individual chat, open the Chat screen and tap and hold a friend's name. Tap 'Chat Settings' and make sure the 'Message Notifications' toggle is turned on. The toggle should be blue when message notifications are enabled. The Chat Settings screen is also where you can enable Story Notifications for a friend.

If you aren't receiving notifications from a group chat, open the Chat screen and tap and hold a group. Tap 'Chat Settings' and select 'Message Notifications.' In this menu, you have three options: 'All Messages,' 'Mentions Only,' and 'Silent.' If you want to receive notifications for every new message in the group chat, select 'All Messages.' If you only want to receive notifications when someone mentions you in the chat, select 'Mentions Only.' Follow these steps, and Snapchat notifications from individual friends or groups should now be fixed.
