Frequently Asked Questions about Sneak Peek Gender DNA Testing.
How accurate is the Sneak Peek early gender DNA test?In laboratory testing, SneakPeek accurately determined fetal sex in 99.1% of 108 pregnant women at 7 weeks gestational age. See the peer-reviewed study in the International Journal of Pregnancy and Childbirth (Int J Pregn & Chi Birth. 2019; 5(4):135-137). In a separate laboratory test, fetal sex was accurately determined in 99.6% of 241 pregnant women at 9 weeks gestational age and later into pregnancy. See the peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Pregnancy and Child Health. (J Preg Child Health. 2017; 4:358).
I’m having twins. Can sneak peak determine the gender of each one?SneakPeek looks for male DNA in the fetal DNA found in mom's blood sample. In the case of identical twins, if male DNA is found, then both babies are boys. If no male DNA is found, then both babies are girls. For fraternal twins, finding male DNA means at least one baby is a boy, but cannot distinguish if the second is a boy or girl.
How does the Sneak Peek test work?During pregnancy, cell-free fetal DNA is released by the placenta and can be found in mom’s bloodstream. Using a small sample of mom’s blood, SneakPeek tests for the presence of male DNA (Y-chromosomes). Y-chromosomes would only be present if mom is pregnant with a boy. If no Y-chromosomes are found, mom is carrying a girl. This method is known as noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and is safe for both mom and baby. See the peer-reviewed published study that indicates this test is 99.1% accurate as early as 7 weeks into pregnancy in the International Journal of Pregnancy and Childbirth (Int J Pregn & Chi Birth. 2019; 5(4):135-137).
How are my results given to me?You’ll get an email from [email protected] with the subject line “Your SneakPeek Result Is In!”
Be sure to check all your folders including Promotions and Junk Mail in case your email filter redirects it, or use your email search tool bar to search for sneakpeekresults.
Does a previous miscarriage affect my test results?Clinical studies have shown that fetal DNA clears rapidly from the maternal bloodstream, within 1-2 days. Therefore, a miscarriage will not affect your current test results.
Can I use the Sneak Peek test if I’m not 7 weeks into pregnancy? We know it's hard to wait! SneakPeek looks for Y chromosomes in the fetal DNA found in mom's blood. To avoid inaccurate test results, it's imperative to wait until you're 7 weeks pregnant to ensure the level of Y chromosomes is high enough to read. Already purchased the test? No worries, you can hold on to it until you're 7 weeks pregnant – the test kit is good for a year. If you're not sure you're at 7 weeks yet, use our easy pregnancy calculator to double check.
Is the test safe? The SneakPeek Early Gender DNA Test is a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT), and it's safe for both mom and baby.
What is the difference between Sneak Peek at Home and Sneak Peek Clinical?
With SneakPeek At-Home, you receive a test kit that provides everything you need to take the test, from the comfort of your home. Three lancets are included that you use to prick your finger to collect 7-10 drops of blood in a small test tube. The sample is then mailed back to SneakPeek Labs for analysis. This video shows the SneakPeek At-Home process from beginning to end.
SneakPeek Clinical lets you visit a participating location to have your blood drawn in a clinical setting. The clinic then sends your sample to SneakPeek Labs for analysis. See our SneakPeek Clinical page to find a location near you.
I’ve seen gender predictor tests that use urine samples. How is Sneak Peek different?SneakPeek is a DNA test that looks for male chromosomes in the cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) found in mom's blood, a process that was first established in 1997 and refined in a multitude of scientific publications since. Urine-based tests have no scientific validity, as there are no gender markers in urine. See this blog post for more details.
