Snell Knots July 13, 2013, 08:56:17 PM Anybody use snell knots on offset wide gap hooks? I read where a lot of guys use them on straight shank flippin hooks for a cantilever effect when they set the hook. Just curious. Re: Snell Knots #1 July 14, 2013, 07:20:21 AM If they don't have a welded eye on the hooks you will not be able to tie a snell knot that is the reason that most people probably do not use them on offset hooks. Now if they do have a welded eye then I don't see why you would not be able to use a snell knot.

Re: Snell Knots #2 July 14, 2013, 12:46:29 PM Why welded eye? In salt water we snelled every bait hook regardless of the eye style, in fact we didn't even run the line through the eye unless the eye was bent. There are even "spaded" hooks that just have a flattened top that are made for snelling. I would think, because of the offset in the wide gap hooks, snell knots would not be effective.

I should have said you can tie it with a non-welded eye but then you take the chance of your line slipping into the gap or possibly rubbing on the gap and causing a weak spot on your line. I would agree that these probably do work better with straight shank hooks.

Re: Snell Knots #4 July 14, 2013, 05:08:45 PM I've snelled EWG hooks with no issues at all. Dobyns Rods Lew's Rougarou Tackle ShredFin

Re: Snell Knots #5 July 14, 2013, 09:04:43 PM I'm gonna experiment with it next time out. I plan on trying it with a small (1/O) EWG. I'm flippin a small 3" craw. That's why I'm using small hooks. Thanks for the input guys! Lew's ~ Stren ~ Arkie ~ Strike King ~ Jackall ~ Big Bite Baits ~ Stanley Jigs ~ Luck E Strike ~ Skeeter-Yamaha

Thanks, I was wondering if it was more than the obvious.

Re: Snell Knots #7 July 15, 2013, 05:25:28 PM Snell knots are great to use when you're flipping while using a flipping hook because the snell knot creates the line to come down at an angle so when you're tungsten falls on it or their is pressure added onto it from a fish, the hook actually gets pushed out at an angle giving you a better hook up ratio. That video goes into detail on it. Print Go Up Pages1 User actions
