Snow White (1937 Walt Disney Cartoon Version) - Character Profile

Context

This is Snow White as she appears in the immensely successful Walt Disney animated movie Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, released in 1937.

It is frequently considered to be the greatest American animation film, and several of the songs became classics.

(Most Disney classic adaptations draw either from French fairy tales collected by Perrault, or German ones collected by the Grimms. Here it is a German tale, Schneewittchen – ed.).

What got me thinking about writing the princesses up and some of their villains was Shrek the third, when the princesses came together like some kind of odd X-team each with their own mutant powers. Snow White leads an animal attack with Led Zepplin’s Immigrant song as a brief backdrop.

This and her innocence combined are likely her strongest allies. It has garnered her both friends and protectors.

Her ability to summon beasts occurs as the animals are drawn to her innocent nature. They will work hard to please her in whatever capacity. They also actively warn her of and defend her from threats.

Snow White is quite a good cook.

She can be pretty persuasive, ordering even Grumpy to do what she wants.

History

Once upon a time, there lived a lovely little Princess named Snow White. But her vain and wicked stepmother, the Queen, feared that someday Snow White’s beauty would surpass her own.

So, she dressed the little Princess in rags and forced her to do manual labor as a scullery maid.

Each day the vain Queen consulted her magic mirror. “Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?”…and as long as the mirror answered, “You are the fairest one of all.” Snow White was safe from the Queen’s cruel jealousy.

Fairest

One morning, while the youth was scrubbing the stone staircases, the magic mirror told the Queen that Snow White was indeed the fairest in all the land.

Within hours, Snow White met a handsome young prince. Completely captivated with her, he fell in love at once.

While the young prince serenaded Snow White, the Queen looked on with contempt. She devised a plan to get rid of her step-daughter for good.

She called her most faithful huntsman. He was to take Snow White into the forest and kill her. When he objected, she demanded he bring back her heart as proof. The huntsman was shocked but steeled himself to the task.

The huntsman considered going through with it. But in the end his conscience wouldn’t allow it. He returned to the Queen with a pig’s heart in place of Snow White’s.

Meanwhile, Snow White fled into the forest. With the help of local animals, she reached the Seven Dwarfs’ cottage. Snow White and her new animal companions cleaned the dwarves’ home, in hopes they may allow her to stay.

FRUIT VENDOR!!

The Dwarves came home from work to find Snow White asleep in their upstairs bed. After a comical meeting, Snow White endeavored to clean up these little men and give the cottage a “woman’s touch”.

The huntsman’s deception was soon uncovered. The Queen took matters into her own hands. In her alchemy lab, she concocted a spell that would change her appearance to that of an old hag peddling apples.

She then made a death apple; one bite would mean instant death. The Queen was meticulous in her planning, she checked for an antidote. There was one: Love’s first kiss. The Queen wasn’t worried about that happening.

The animals deduced the old hag was actually the Queen. But try as they might, they couldn’t convince the naïve Snow White. So they went with much haste to the mines, to warn the Seven Dwarves as they worked.

Long live the Queen

The animals returned quickly with the dwarves. But they were too late. Snow White was already dead.

The Dwarves gave chase after the wicked Queen, who climbed up a rocky peak. The wind was howling and lightning crashing overhead. Perched above, the Queen had her murderous eyes fixed on the little men!

Using a branch as a lever the Queen pried at a large boulder, set to roll it down and crush the dwarves. She let out an evil cackle!

Just when the boulder was about to break free, a chance bolt of lightning blasted the ledge away where she stood. The Queen fell to her death.

A sleep like death

The Apple of the Sleeping Death did its work on Snow White. She slept in a death-like state.

So beautiful even in death, that the dwarfs could not find it in their hearts to bury her. They fashioned a coffin of glass and gold, and kept eternal vigil at her side.

The Prince, who had searched far and wide, heard of the maiden who slept in the glass coffin.

The Prince came to her and kissed her, true love’s first kiss. The Princess Snow White awoke, she rode off into the sunset with her Prince to his castle where they lived happily ever after!
