eating etiquette (how to eat...)
Table manners for eating soft-boiled eggs. Soft-boiled eggs are often served in an eggcup made with a wide rim and a bowl that is narrow at the bottom.
- Place the egg's most pointed end in the cup.
- Crack the shell with a knife in a horizontal movement, all the way around the egg.
- The tip of the knife is used to lift the shell from the egg and place it on the side of the plate.
Because the exposed part of the egg is relatively flat, if a dab of butter is placed on it, the butter melts and flows over the egg.
A mound of salt and pepper is made on the side of the plate. With a small spoon, such as an after-dinner coffee spoon, a bite of egg is scooped from the shell and dipped into the seasonings. Alternatively, a pinch of salt and pepper may be sprinkled over each bite by hand.

Once it is poured into the proper glass, it’s time to evaluate and enjoy the wine. Evaluating wine involves four basic steps – looking, swirling, smelling, and tasting.
- Step #1 – Look. Holding the wine glass up against a white background, such as a napkin or table cloth, to evaluate its color and clarity. Red wines should range in color from deep purple to brick red. White wines should range in color from lemon gold to golden amber.
- Step #2 – Swirl. Swirl the wine in your glass to aerate it.
- Step #3 – Smell. Put your nose in the glass and take a deep breath. Older wines should have subtler aromas than younger ones.
- Step #4 – Taste. To taste the wine, fill your mouth about ½ full and subtly swish the wine around.
