Finding xi in a data :

xi is defined as the class mark !!

To find xi perform these steps :

  • Find the upper limit of the class
  • Find the lower limit of the class
  • Add the two limits
  • Then divide the sum by two
  • You will get the class mark

Examples :

Number of students         Marks

10   -     20                            97

20   -     30                           96

30   -     40                            95

40   -      50                           94

Find the xi of class 30 - 40

xi = ( 30 + 40 ) / 2

  = 70 / 2

  = 35

Find the xi of class 10 - 20

xi = ( 10 + 20 ) / 2

   = 30 / 2

   = 15
