I just had this problem with a pretty new maker. Only about 2 mo's old. It turned out that I didn't put the blade in correctly. Once I took it out and put it back in, it worked with no problem.

SOURCE: Cricut makes loud grinding noise and will not turn roller bar

My wifes' cricut seems to have had the same problem. Try turning off the power, then manually slide the cutting carriage to the left look inside to the right. you should see a red button pull on it until it clicks. power up the cricut and see it it works. it solved the problem for my wife.
