Sep 15, 2016 37 0 10,530 Hi Guys, I want to increase the fps on my rig for VR in a flight sim. I currently have a Geforce GTX 1060 and want to know what I can upgrade it to give me more fps ? My motherboard is a MSI H170 Gaming M3 and I have an an i7-6700 3.4ghz. I don't know if I need to upgrade that as well so any help would be great. Thanks Solution Graphics card prices have been really bad this last year, largely due to cryptocurrency miners messing up the market again. Right now, just to get performance that's moderately better than a GTX 1060 6GB, you would likely need to pay around twice as much as what the GTX 1060 cost when it came out over 5 years ago. The RTX 3050 might be the minimum worth considering, potentially offering around 50% more graphics performance than a 1060 6GB and support for the latest hardware features, but they are currently priced around $500 in the US, despite supposedly having a $250 MSRP, the same as what the 1060 originally launched for. Just over a year ago, you could have gotten more performance for less, as cards like the 2060 SUPER could be... Sort by date Sort by votes popatim

Sep 15, 2016 37 0 10,530 Yeah, that is a worry, if possible I want to do a bit at a time if GPU pushes frames up a little it will help. I need to know which GPU to go for that will fit my board and if the next step was CPU again if my current rig will take it A grand would be tops. Upvote 0 Downvote Satan-IR

Oct 8, 2011 5,790 1,406 34,840 Graphics card prices have been really bad this last year, largely due to cryptocurrency miners messing up the market again. Just over a year ago, you could have gotten more performance for less, as cards like the 2060 SUPER could be had for around $400 and offered close to double the performance of a 1060 6GB. Now, that level of performance would set you back over $700. There are signs that graphics card pricing and availability are beginning to improve, but it's hard to say how long that might take. Perhaps later in the year prices might be closer to where they should be, but that's largely dependant on the volatile cryptocurrency market, so it's hard to say for sure. If you are planning a more thorough system upgrade, other components are priced fairly reasonably right now though. Though if you are trying to run a modern flight sim in VR, I suspect your performance might be more limited by your 1060 than anything. You could try lowering your resolution to test how much room there is for frame rates to improve on your hardware with a new graphics card. Compatibility-wise, current cards should work with your hardware though. Upvote 0 Downvote Solution B

Sep 15, 2016 37 0 10,530 Thanks for the detail, I can get an RTX 3050 for around $300 where I am, but I need to be sure it is compatible with my current system, my PSU is around 6 years old, without pulling the covers off I cannot remember the spec. If an RTX 3050 would give just 10 frame improvements it would be good. I m not really up on this stuff so I don't know if this is relevant, but in use, my CPU is pulling 34% GPU 39% and MEM 55% according to Window 10 Task Manager, does this mean anything? I am seeing that as nothing is really working hard. I have played around with reducing settings etc, but not really seeing any change, I am using X-plane and removing plugins makes little difference. If you need more info to help on this let me know, I really don't want to spend bucks on something that gives me nothing. Thanks Upvote 0 Downvote J

Sep 15, 2016 37 0 10,530 Ok this is so confusing, I need a minimum of 20-25 frames for xplane to run reasonably well, and I would like to switch on a weather engine that does consume frames. So it seems to me I need both GPU and CPU, but which ones for my system? Or is it more complicated than I am already finding it. Most of my hair has already left!
