The old theory that you need cheese to catch a mouse has been superseded by some inventive South Australians.

A wetter-than-usual summer has provided the perfect conditions for mice numbers to boom across the state.

ABC Radio Adelaide's Afternoons producer Danielle Butler revealed she was using confectionery to bait traps — and it worked.

"We tried cheese, we tried peanut butter, and nothing worked, so we tried chocolate," she said.

"About 20 minutes later we heard: Snap!"

Listeners were quick to call in and text their variety of baits — some handy, others hysterical.

Bacon is good for you (not them)

Duncan from Palmer said his sure-fire bait was bacon.

"The smaller the piece of bacon, the better," he said.

"I have caught four mice in the same trap with the same bait within the last three hours."

Duncan said the piece needed to be small enough to ensure the trap was triggered.

Smoked smallgoods were also suggested by many callers.

Marcus from Blair Athol had a more novel approach to trapping mice.

"We can bag [them] with a tiny tray of butterscotch schnapps," he said.

"We come out the next morning, find them absolutely shickered, and then we pick them up and put them outside."

Stuart from Trott Park said, although not to his taste, mice could not turn away from cashew nut spread.

"I've got upwards of 20 in the last couple of days with it," he said.

Hazelnut spread also received several mentions.

Brenda from Hallett Cove said she reached for the lolly jar for her bait.

"We have had success with a slightly moistened wine gum," she texted.

Small pieces of marshmallow were also suggested, as were sultanas or raisins cut in half.
