How to Tighten Spark Plugs
Use the Champion torque recommendation below as a guide for tightening all spark plugs.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Tapered Seat Plugs
Step One
Install the new plug finger tight, and complete the installation with a torque wrench.
Note: If using a torque wrench vs. plug wrench, please refer to the Torque Recommendations chart below.
Step Two
Turn Finger Tight. A tapered seat plug does not use gaskets and requires one-sixteenth (1/16) turn.
Note: If using a torque wrench, please refer to the Torque Recommendations chart below.
Gasket Type Plugs
Step One
Turn Finger Tight. A new or reinstalled plug with a new gasket will require ⅜-⅝ turn to effect a gas tight seal depending on head material.
Note: If using a torque wrench, please refer to the Torque Recommendations chart below.
Step Two
For reinstalled plugs with a used gasket only a ¼ turn is required for gas tight seal for both cast iron and aluminum cylinder heads.
Note: If using a torque wrench, please refer to the Torque Recommendations chart below.
