Spelling tip number 5 - using memory tricks

neccesary or necessary? separate or seperate? accomodation or accommodation? embarassed or embarrassed?

Memory tricks are great to help you remember difficult spellings, or the bits of spelling you keep getting wrong, or how many of a certain letter is needed. Use words within words or sayings.

Seeing words within words is good for deciding which homophone is right - peace or piece, there/they’re/their, here or hear?

Homophones are words with the same sound but different spelling & meaning.

Can you see a word within these words - piece, hear, there. This will help you remember the correct usage for these words.

Piece, hear, there —see the words within words and then make a relevant sentence with them.

piece — a piece of pie.hear — You hear with your ear and you learn.there — here, there, where, everywhere. This really helps you remember the correct usage. Check out the there/they’re/their lesson.

See words within words:address: add an address separate: separate a rat, or Don’t separate a para from his parachute.

Use tricks to help you remember how many letters are in words, which is useful for those tricky words embarrass, necessary, accommodate, stationary or stationery.

stationery or stationary: stationery = envelopes, pens, paper; stationary = at the station, my car is stationary.

accommodation (c and m are the tricky letters): The accommodation has 2 Cots and 2 Mattresses and 2 rOund babies. Or, The accommodation has 2 Cats and 2 Mice.

embarrass Can you see how many r's and s's there are?

I go Really Red and So Shy when I’m embarrassed.

I go Really Red And Smile Shyly when I’m embarrassed.

Word family: embarrass, embarrassed, embarrassing, embarrassment

necessary (the tricky bit is remembering the C and 2 x S)It's necessary to have 1 Collar and 2 x Sleeves.It's necessary to Cut Some Services.

Sayings and rhymes can help. But you have to keep using them to remember them.

I've used this on occasions when I need the word rhythm like right now as I'm typing this!rhythm has your two hips moving - it sums up rhythm

because big elephants can always understand small elephants.or big elephants can't always use small exits.

chaos — cyclones, hurricanes and other storms create chaos.

bought and brought

bring = brought

Use whatever works for you. By coming up with your own tricks it helps you remember them and the word.
