Spider-Man: Brand New Day has finally started filming ahead of it swinging into cinemas in July 2026.

Filming started in August 2025 in Glasgow, and Tom Holland shared a first look at the new Spidey suit to mark the exciting occasion.

Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton took over from Jon Watts to direct the fourth solo outing for Tom Holland, with Zendaya also returning for the new movie. There's also some other unexpected MCU returns to enjoy, but more on those in a bit.

Holland had previously said that Spider-Man 4 would only happen if they had a story that was worth returning for: "I won't make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character."

That gives us hope for the new movie and to mark the start of filming, here's everything you need to know about Spider-Man 4.

Spider-Man 4 release date – when will Spider-Man: Brand New Day be out in cinemas?

As mentioned above, Spider-Man 4 will be released in cinemas on 31 July 2026, instead of its original date of 24 July 2026.

There was no official reason for the delay, but it's likely to give the new movie some space from Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which is released on 17 July 2026 and also stars Tom Holland and Zendaya.

It means that it will have been almost five years since Spider-Man: No Way Home by the time we see Tom Holland's Spidey return.

We thought he might make a surprise appearance first in Avengers: Doomsday, but that has now been delayed from 1 May 2026 to 18 December 2026.

As mentioned above, filming is now under way on Spider-Man: Brand New Day as of August 2025. Hopefully that means we won't get any release date delays for the new movie, but you never know.

Spider-Man 4 cast – who's joining Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Tom Holland is, of course, coming back as Peter Parker for his fourth solo MCU movie, and he'll be joined by Zendaya reprising her role as MJ.

"The idea is crazy. It's a little different to anything we've done before, but I think the fans are gonna really respond to it," Holland teased in October 2024.

In a separate interview, Holland said that the script – from Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who have co-written all three Spider-Man movies to date – had him "bouncing around the living room" with Zendaya.

Jacob Batalon is reportedly back as Ned, but it's unclear how big of a role he'll play in this new movie.

There have been other exciting MCU returns confirmed too, with Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle), Michael Mando (Scorpion) and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner) all making an appearance in the new movie.

As for newcomers, we know that Sadie Sink will be joining the MCU in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. We don't yet know who she's playing, but fans have been speculating that she could be Jean Grey.

The Bear star Lisa Colón-Zayas has also joined the movie, but like with Sink, we don't know who she is playing as of yet.

The new movie would, of course, have to find some way around the fact that MJ and Ned no longer remember their shared history with Peter, let alone that Peter is Spider-Man.

We imagine that won't take long to resolve itself, though.

Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) doesn't know Peter now either, but he does know Spider-Man, so he could be back again.

One person who definitely won't be in it is Marisa Tomei, as Aunt May was tragically killed by the Green Goblin. The multiverse does offer the possibility of an alternate Aunt May (like the alternate Spider-Men), but we feel this won't be done.

It's also unlikely that Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire would return, again, to their roles, given that their brief but meaningful appearance in No Way Home is rectified as the plot reseals the multiverse.

However, they do now have official MCU names as "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" (Maguire) and "The Amazing Spider-Man" (Garfield), so who's to say they couldn't swing by the MCU again?

Garfield would be up for another team-up movie as long as the story called for it, saying: "It would have to be something very unique, very special and serving to an audience and in service of the character."

However, in January 2025, Garfield said that he's had no talks about returning, although admitting that "no one's gonna trust anything I say" given that he fibbed about his No Way Home return.

Kirsten Dunst wasn't asked to come back as Mary-Jane Watson for No Way Home but has always been open that she "would have" reprised the role. Could we see that in a new movie? Let's hope so.

Could we see Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom in the fourth movie? He does appear in the No Way Home credits scene but is taken back to his own universe. (More on him later.)

Spider-Man 4 plot – did No Way Home set up Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Short answer: not really. The climax effectively wraps up the trilogy and sets a blank slate for the future. The possibilities for that new movie are endless.

"At the end of the movie we just made, you see Spider-Man make a momentous decision, one that you've never seen him make before. It's a sacrifice. And that gives us a lot to work with for the next film," Amy Pascal teased to The New York Times.

At CinemaCon 2025, Holland teased that the new movie is a "fresh start", but we weren't given any extra plot details.

The title shares its name with a comic book story that followed One More Day, which was loosely adapted for No Way Home. It saw people forget that Peter Parker was Spider-Man, something that was set up by the end of No Way Home.

In December 2024, Pascal also gave us the first plot details for Spider-Man 4 which already hinted at this development.

"We have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker, and that he was going to focus on being Spider-Man because being Peter Parker was too hard," she told Deadline.

One potential option is to deliver a long-awaited battle between Spider-Man and Venom on the big screen. As we saw in the Venom 2 credits scene, Eddie Brock and Venom are transported to the MCU.

It's because of the botched spell that Doctor Strange casts, but he rectifies it at the end, which means Eddie and Venom are taken back to their universe. A piece of the Venom symbiote is left behind, though, so it could take over somebody in the MCU.

Venom: The Last Dance didn't resolve this lingering issue of a piece of Venom left behind in the MCU. Given that the movie ended with Venom's sacrifice, this piece of symbiote could be a way to finally bring Venom and Spidey together.

That movie has also been confirmed to be the final Venom movie, but Tom Hardy has certainly seemed open to returning as Eddie Brock/Venom. We still think it's unlikely to happen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day though.

No Way Home also made a fun nod to Ned's villainous turn as Hobgoblin in the comics.

We think it's unlikely we'll see it play out on screen, but stranger things have happened in the MCU.

Of course not! Filming has only just started on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, so you'll have to make do with No Way Home rewatches for now.
