Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been pushed back until 2023.

The highly-anticipated sequel had been expected to hit cinemas later this year in October.

However, Sony has now revealed that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on June 2, 2023.

The third part of the Spider-Verse franchise, currently titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part II, is scheduled to launch in cinemas on March 29, 2024.

Across the Spider-Verse will once again follow Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) as he explores different dimensions alongside Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld).

Oscar Isaac will be back as Miguel O'Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, following his appearance in the first movie's post-credits scene.

Luna Lauren Vélez has also confirmed she'll be back as Miles's mother Rio.

An official reason for the delay has yet to be revealed.

However, Across the Spider-Verse's writer and producer Christopher Miller tweeted that it has offered the team "more time to make it great".

Production started on the sequel back in June 2020.

The producers of the first movie – Miller and Phil Lord – have written the script for the sequel along with Shang-Chi's David Callaham, while the directing trio is Soul's Kemp Powers, Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K Thompson.

Miller has already been teasing what fans can expect from the upcoming sequel.

"The development of new groundbreaking art techniques being done for the next Spider-Verse movie are already blowing me away," he said.

"It's going to make the first movie look quaint."

The official synopsis for the upcoming movie reads: "Miles Morales returns for an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered."

Meanwhile, Sony has also revealed that Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web will release on July 7, 2023.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on June 2, 2023. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
