Spirit Airlines, one of the fastest-growing air carriers in the Minneapolis-St. Paul market, will soon be moving from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s (MSP) Terminal 2-Humphrey to Terminal 1. Starting Jan. 27 with its 5:26 a.m. arrival and 6:17 a.m. departure, Spirit will begin operating out of Terminal 1’s Concourse E. All Spirit Airlines’ passengers will want to take note of this change and date. Spirit passengers with departure dates prior to but arrival dates after Jan. 27, should especially take note, as they will be leaving from Terminal 2 and returning at Terminal 1. Both terminals are connected via light rail, and there is no charge for riding between terminals. Spirit’s ticket counter at Terminal 1 will be located on the north end of the ticketing level near American and US Airways and adjacent to Security Checkpoint 2. Spirit Airlines began service at MSP in May 2012. Less than two months later it announced it was adding daily service to Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) and seasonal service to Ft. Lauderdale and Fort Meyers. Then, in early 2013, it announced new seasonal service to Denver and Phoenix, as well as expanded service to DFW. In August 2013, Spirit announced three new destinations (Tampa, Orlando and Los Angeles). And in May 2014, Spirit began service to Houston and Baltimore. Today at MSP Spirit operates 11 flights daily. After Jan. 27, Spirit Airline passengers can still choose to park at MSP Value Parking Ramps at Terminal 2 and take the light rail back to Terminal 1, saving $8 a day in parking fees. The move will provide Spirit with more flexibility and space (two dedicated gates versus one common-use gate) and, in the short-term, will allow Sun Country and Southwest Airlines room to expand service at Terminal 2. To meet longer-term increases in aircraft gate demand at Terminal 2, the Metropolitan Airports Commission will begin construction of three additional aircraft gates there this spring. Those gates are expected to be completed by fall 2016.
