Vice President Spiro Agnew pleaded no contest to charges of income tax evasion. He was fined $10,000 and resigned from his job.

Vice President Spiro Agnew was said to have received cash bribes from engineering firms during his term as Governor of Maryland. The events took place during the election campaign of 1967. Agnew had claimed that the all the charges were lies and fake news. To avoid more serious charges of accepting bribes Agnew agreed to plead no contest to the charge of income tax evasion. Agnew resigned as Vice President on October 10, 1973. As a result of his resignation, Gerald Ford was selected to become the new Vice President, and he became the first President never elected to national office when he replaced President Nixon when he resigned.
