The out-of-town games are intended to deepen its regional fanbase, it said.
For the 2022-23 season, two games will be hosted in Austin, one in Mexico City and one in the Alamodome, which the Spurs said will be a celebration marking the team’s 50th anniversary in San Antonio. The Spurs played in the Alamodome from 1993-2002, when they moved to AT&T Stadium.
“Hosting these four games is part of our vision to purposefully engage and celebrate our entire Spurs following from Mexico to Austin, while fostering the next generation of fans,” said RC Buford, CEO for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, in a prepared statement.
“Playing in front of our Austin fans for the first time ever during the regular season, returning to Mexico City and hosting a historic celebration in the Alamodome will each be exciting moments for our entire organization. We are grateful for our loyal supporters throughout our entire region and are thrilled for the opportunity to play in front of them as part of our 50th anniversary season.”
The Alamodome event, if it fills the more than 65,000 seats at the venue, is “poised to break the attendance record for an NBA regular season game” the Spurs said in its release.
The Spurs’ remaining 37 home games will be played at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.
Tickets go on sale for the general public Sept. 1, while season ticket members and the Spurs Fan Club can get theirs Aug. 26-31.
The Spurs’ desire to play some of their home games away from San Antonio was controversial and caused worries among some fans about the team’s future in the city. Team officials needed the approval of not only the NBA but Bexar County Commissioners Court. In May, they asked commissioners to amend their lease to allow the team to play two regular season home games within 100 miles of the county-owned AT&T Center and two out of the country.
