Definition – What is the square of a number?

A square of a number is when the number is multiplied by itself.For example, 22 = 2 x 2 = 4, 42 = 4 x 4 = 16, 1722 = 172 x 172 = 29,584.

Write a number squared with a small two raised to the top right of the number. It is called an exponent. 102 is “10 squared,” and the small “2” means that the number is squared.

How to type a squared number

• In Microsoft Word and other Office products, hi-light the “2,” then right-click and select Font to open the font menu. Select “Superscript.”
• In Google Docs and other products, hi-light the “2” you want to have as an exponent. Select “Format” -> “Text” -> “Superscript.”
• In HTML and web documents, surround the exponent 2 with  tags. Write 52 as “5²”.
• In LaTeX notation, use the ^ symbol before the exponent. Write 52 as 5^2.
