This article describes the formula syntax and usage of the STANDARDIZE function in Microsoft Excel.

Description

Returns a normalized value from a distribution characterized by mean and standard_dev.

Syntax

STANDARDIZE(x, mean, standard_dev)

The STANDARDIZE function syntax has the following arguments:

• X    Required. The value you want to normalize.

• Mean    Required. The arithmetic mean of the distribution.

• Standard_dev    Required. The standard deviation of the distribution.

Remarks

• If standard_dev ≤ 0, STANDARDIZE returns the #NUM! error value.

Example

Copy the example data in the following table, and paste it in cell A1 of a new Excel worksheet. For formulas to show results, select them, press F2, and then press Enter. If you need to, you can adjust the column widths to see all the data.

Data	Description
42	Value to normalize.
40	Arithmetic mean of the distribution.
1.5	Standard deviation of the distribution.
Formula	Description	Result
=STANDARDIZE(A2,A3,A4)	Normalized value of 42, using 40 as the arithmetic mean and 1.5 as the standard deviation.	1.33333333
