Profile Image for Bumbo.Bumbo207 reviews18 followersFollowFollowJune 2, 2020I'm going to get the negatives out of the way first because there aren't a lot and Steel Ball run is blowing me away. I didn't like how the stand ended up belonging to someone else at the last minute. Feels like a cop out, since Dio can't die here and the stand introduced is too overpowered for him to be running around with. He ends up with a weaker version as a result of getting one of Jesus's eyes, which can also cure the dino-disease for some reason. Then again, why is this where a draw the line for plausibility? Either way, it kind of irked me because the whole thing felt like admin rather than storytelling. This art though! The color team is pushing the boundaries page after page. Providing depth, establishing the mood. Everything feels more grand and meaningful. The black and white art is already good, but the stellar coloring just makes the whole package sing. I didn't get to go into this in the previous volume, but I want to talk about Dio's backstory. It ended up working out, as this volume expands on what Dio's past means for him today. Dio and his mother being washed away in a river before being discovered and raised under the watch of a rich landowner has some clear parallels with Moses, whether they be intentional or not. And similarly to Moses, Dio resolves to return to his homeland and reckon with the slave-driving baron. In his youth, Dio learned 2 important things from his mother that we can see in him today: brutal determination and pride. Dio's mother refused to let being swept away in the storm, working under neo-slavery, or sexual assault take her life. But ultimately, she gave her life for the sake of protecting her dignity and her pride. It's such a stone-cold badass moment, reminding me of when Erina used mud the wash the taste of Dio's kiss from her mouth. This has shaped Dio into who he is today. Aside from his determination and pride, Dio is all too aware of how those without status or wealth can be made to live miserable lives. He's determined to escape from such a fate and seek revenge on everyone who allowed his suffering to happen. It's compelling stuff. This is what sets Dio apart from Gyro, as explained at the end of the third leg of the race. The path forward has never been clear for Dio. He's had to scratch and claw for everything in his life. Since he was an infant thrown into the storming river, he has been fighting to survive. This is what gives Dio the strength the to forge headlong through the river- he was always had to forge his own path in the face of cruel opposition. Dio's life of struggle has shaped him into the strongest version of himself that he could possible be; he's determined to continue pushing himself; and you can be damn sure he's not going to fail and damage the pride his mother gave her life to protect. If Dio is motivated by pride, Gyro is motivated by shame. By defying the king's orders, he has brought shame to his family name and his ancestors before him. While Dio has had to find his own direction in life, Gyro's life was predetermined generations ago- since before even his grandfather was born. He was to serve as royal executioner. Instead of running towards pride and power, Gyro is running away from his responsibilities. Everything Dio has, he has created or found for himself. Everything Gyro has, he has inherited. And even that isn't enough for him. Like Johnny said, it's not about right or wrong. I doubt many would argue that Gyro has the more righteous, selfless motivations. But this is about who will actually win. The race where this all plays out is fantastic. Both men push themselves to the limit, with Gyro going to fantastic lengths for the sake of winning. But Dio is hungrier, so when his superhuman analytical skills aren't enough to guarantee the win, he cheats. The way Araki is analyzing his own characters and the motivation in within the text of the story is something I've always wanted from Jojo. For too long, I'd felt that each stand of the week could be interchangeable for all they're worth. But with this new fluid approach to storytelling, things connect better than ever. Each enemy feels like they matter and contribute to the larger overall narrative. The characters doubt themselves, fail, and grow. We are fully introduced to Dio and learn his backstory in vol 6. In vol 7, we compare and contrast that with Gyro's history, seeing what it all means for the present day and identifying his weaknesses. And in vol 8, Gyro begins to his journey of growth. It's fluid storytelling the likes of which Jojo has never seen. Narratively and artistically, it all comes to a crescendo in The True Man's World. Speaking of which... __________ | To Be Continued | ‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾

Profile Image for Jorge A. Lara. Profile Image for cannis ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧.cannis ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧28 reviewsFollowFollowAugust 6, 2022everything about this volume was SO. GOOD. from the art to the storytelling, i am absolutely hooked on part 7. the art in this volume was exceptional and the coloring team brings the story to life in ways i could’ve never imagined. the contrasting backstories of dio and gyro, and everything thus far leading up to the conclusion of the third leg in the race, came together beautifully. i really enjoyed the ending of the scary monsters arc, and i’m loving seeing the stand users serve more of a purpose throughout the journey of the race than just being random villains along the way. i feel a lot of elements part 3 lacked during their trip to egypt, araki has learned from and it’s shown throughout the narratives in part 7 so far. hot pants is a new introduction i’m enjoying, and i’m excited to see the role he serves moving forward.Profile Image for Ashley (Red-Haired Ash Reads).Ashley (Red-Haired Ash Reads)3,450 reviews180 followersFollowFollowOctober 12, 2023Series: Steel Ball Run #7Rating: 4 stars - It was really goodThis volume we learn the truth about Scary Monster, see Gyro gain a stand, the final leg of part 3 of the race, and are introduced to Hot Pants. Very excited to do so. The art and panelling still makes it a bit hard for me to understand what's happening. I guess it's just Araki's style but for someone like me who grew up on clear and perfected art style like HxH it's a bit frustrating to read. But I can forgive all the shortcomings when it's fun.
