Stephen Colbert is an American comedian, talk show host, actor, and author. His television credits include The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Strangers with Candy. He currently hosts the CBS talk program The Late Show. Stephen Tyrone Colbert was born on May 13, 1964, in Washington, D.C. He was raised in Charleston, South Carolina, the youngest of 11 children. His father, James, and two of his siblings, Paul and Peter, were killed in a September 1974 plane crash. His mother, Lorna, died in 2013 at age 93. Colbert attended Charleston’s Episcopal Porter-Gaud School. He studied philosophy at Hampden-Sydney College of Virginia before transferring to Northwestern University. He graduated in 1986 with a BA degree in theater.
CAREER Colbert moved to Chicago in 1986 immediately after college. He worked an office job and took improv classes at the Second City comedy troupe. During his tenure, he performed for two years with their traveling group. It was there that he met comedians Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. The trio created the sketch comedy series ‘Exit 57’. The program ran on Comedy Central for 12 episodes from 1995 to 1996. Three years later they debuted another television series ‘Strangers with Candy’ on Comedy Central. It ran for 3 seasons from 1999 to 2000. A feature film of the same name directed by Dinello was released in 2005. Colbert appeared on 14 episodes of Saturday Night Live from 1996 through 2011. He served as a correspondent and writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart from 1997 to 2005. He voiced various characters for the adult animated series Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law (2001-07). His voice credits also include The Venture Bros., American Dad!, Crank Yankers, The Simpsons, and BoJack Horseman.
Colbert began hosting his own late-night talk show/news satire program on Comedy Central in 2005. The program ran for 10 seasons until its finale in December 2014. The show won several awards including multiple Emmys, 2 Grammys, and 2 Peabody Awards. Colbert took over for David Letterman as the new host of CBS’ The Late Show in September 2015. He made a cameo appearance in the film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), starring Ian McKellen. His film credits also include Bewitched (2005) with Nicole Kidman, and The Love Guru (2008) with Mike Myers. He voiced “The President” for the animated film Monsters vs. Aliens (2009), and “Paul Peterson” for Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014). Colbert began hosting the ‘Kennedy Center Honors’ in December 2014. He’s the host of the 69th Primetime Emmy Award show at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California.
In addition to television, Colbert is an accomplished writer. His book ‘I Am America (and So Can You!) was published in October 2007 by Grand Central Publishing. A similarly titled book I Am a Pole (And So Can You!) was published in 2012. He co-authored the novel Wigfield (2004) with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. He also contributed to Jon Stewart’s 2004 humor book America (The Book). Colbert was named one of Time magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People’ in 2006 and 2012.
